Buzz Lightyear is a space action figure toy who appears in several computer-generated imagery films, such as Toy Story and the cartoon program Buzz Lightyear of Star Command including the movie Buzz Lightyear of Star Common: The Adventure Begins.

Buzz Lightyear is owned by a boy called Andy who thinks he has been given a great toy present to play with. However, Buzz is not the same as other toys since he is not aware that he is a toy and believes that his role is to defend the universe from the Emperor Zurg, who is a threat to the galaxies. He tries to devise a plan to defend the universe with the help of the other toys, such as 'Woody' a toy cowboy, who already knows he's a toy and gets a little impatient with Buzz's plans to save the universe.

Buzz eventually comes to realise through experience that Star Command does not actually exist, his weapons are not real and that he is afterall only a toy like the others.
